Wood Energy Working Groups
Treated and Untreated Wood
The Bioenergy Association supports the responsible recycling and recovery of used and treated timber as an energy resource.
Our Treated and Untreated Wood Working Group brings together businesses and organisations involved in timber recycling, energy recovery and the wider wood-processing sector. The group provides a forum for sharing knowledge, addressing industry challenges and supporting the development of practical approaches to the recovery and use of timber as an energy fuel.
The Working Group includes sector participants with commercial interests in timber recycling, as well as representatives from the Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association and the New Zealand Demolition and Asbestos Association.
Consenting
Used and treated wood can be processed into a suitable fuel for combustion in appropriately designed heat plants. Technical Guide 9: Consenting for combustion of different solid biofuels has been published to support the consenting process.
Interested in getting involved?
If your organisation is involved in timber recycling, wood processing, demolition, energy recovery or related activities, we welcome your participation

Solid Biofuel sub-groups
From time to time WoodEnergyNZ has formed dedicated sub groups where members address specific wood energy sector issues. If you are specifically interested in one of these topics contact the Executive Officer.
Air Quality
The Air Quality Sub group is addressing the inconsistencies and barriers to installation of wood fuelled heat plant across the regions. If you are aware of problems with the air quality plans and policies in in any region or wish guidance on any air emission matter contact the Executive Officer.
Training and Professional Development
The Training and Professional Development sub group oversees a suite of short courses which are open to members and non members. New courses are continuously being developed and if you have a topic that you think needs greater attention you are encouraged to contact the Executive Officer.
Wood Fuel Supply
The Wood Fuel Supply subgroup is currently preparing a projection of the likely wood fuel supply across all regions for the next 20-30 years. This projection will be updated annually and published on this website. The sub group has a programme of work to provide assurance to wood energy facility owners that adequate wood fuel will be available for the economic life of their facility.
Used wood as a fuel
Wood from building demolition and contaminated with paint or additives can often be used as a blended fuel in appropriate boiler systems so that emissions to air from the facility are within the resource consents of the facility. The subgroup is assisting regulators to establish information applicants must provide in order that such blended fuel can be used in their facility.
